KEY Persons of the University of CATANIA in ROBOVOLC

Professor Giovanni Muscato, Associate Professor of UNICT in Industrial Robotics and in Automatic Control. Following graduation he worked with Centro di Studi sui Sistemi in Turin. In 1990 he joined the Dipartimento Elettrico Elettronico e Sistemistico of the University of Catania where he was an Assistant Professor from 1990 to 1998 and where he is presently Associate Professor of Industrial Robotics and of Automatic Control. His research interests include model reduction, walking robots and the use of soft-computing techniques in the modelling and control of dynamical systems. He has been supervisor of more than thirty masters theses. He has been author or co-author of more than 100 publications, including two books, in the area of theory and application of automatic control and robotics. Professor Muscato has been involved in many national and European projects such as ROBINSPEC: A Robot for Industrial inspections (POP Programma Operativo Plurifondo 90/93 Diagnostica Remota D12b), CLAWAR Climbing and Walking Robots (EC BRITE Euram III Thematic Network, and CONNY : Robot Control Based on Neural Networks Systems (ESPRIT).

Professor Giuseppe Nunnari received the "Laurea" degree in Electrical Engineering in 1979 from the University of Catania. After working as a software engineer he has been a researcher of the CNR, the Italian National Research Council in service at the International Institute for Volcanological Research from May 1983 to October 1992, where he carried out researches concerning modelling and processing of geophysical data. He is an Associate Professor of System Theory and Automatic Control at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Catania (Italy) from November 1992. From 1997 he also taught courses in Modelling and Control of Environmental Systems. During the last five years, Giuseppe Nunnari has led a research team involved in the following research activities:· Application of neural networks for modelling and processing of geophysical data (grant of the Italian National Research Council), Application of Neuro-Fuzzy techniques for modelling and control of industrial thermal processes" (Italian National Project on "Control Engineering", MURST). Modelling Environmental Data by using Soft-Computing Techniques (Research Project funded by the Region of Sicily), Monitoring Volcanic activity by image processing (grant of the Italian National Research Council), Application of Soft-computing Strategies to control DC/DC converters, Italian National Project on "Control Engineering", MURST; Inverse Modelling of Geophysical data for volcanic activity monitoring (UE program TEKVOLK Contract ENV4-CT96-0251).

Dr Riccardo Caponetto was born in 1966. He received the Electronic Engineering degree from the University of Catania in 1991 and the PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1995. Starting from 1994 he has been working as researcher at STMicroelectronics. From 1995 to 1998 he was professor of Industrial Robotic at the University of Messina. From 1999 he is Researcher at University of Catania. His interests include Soft Computing techniques and Robotics.
