Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica Elettronica e dei Sistemi
Catania ITALY

University of Catania

The University of Catania was founded in 1434 and is one of the oldest University in Italy. The Dipartimento Elettrico Elettronico e Sistemistico (DEES) was established in 1990, following the reorganization of the Electrotechnical and Electronic Institute that had been operating since 1971.
The name of the Department has changed to Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica Elettronica e dei Sistemi (DIEES) in 2003. Presently, the Staff of the Department includes 23 teaching members and 7 technical and administrative members.

The teaching activity is mainly devoted to about 1700 undergraduates studying for their Degrees (Laurea) in Electrical, Electronic or Computer Engineering. Courses are also offered to students in other branches of the Laurea Degrees and Diploma Degrees offered by the Faculty of Engineering in Catania. Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) courses in Electrical Engineering, in Automation and in Electronic engineering are offered since 1988.

The research activity performed at DIEES deals with several cultural fields within the Electrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering areas. Basic and applied researches are developed in the following fields:
  • Electrical and Electronic Measurements
  • Electrical Power Systems
  • Electrotechnics
  • Microelectronics
  • Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives
  • Systems Automation and Robotics
  • In all fields the research activities involve both national and world-wide collaborations with industries and public institution.

The Systems and Control group of DIEES-UNICT has been involved in research topics regarding robotics and automatic control in various European (ESPRIT, BRITE Euram III) and national (MURST, CNR, ASI, POP) research projects. In the laboratory of DEES several prototype of service and mobile robots have been designed and built (ROBINSPEC: Robot for inspections of industrial plants, PLIF: Piezoelectric microrobots, WALLY: Robot for surface inspections, WHEELEG: Hybrid wheeled/legged robot). The main activities have been concentrated on soft-computing techniques for control, modelling and applications of cellular neural networks. The group has a considerable expertise in all aspects of software and hardware design for embedded systems.
